Couples Counseling

In my work with Couples  I follow Dr. Sue Johnson's Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT).  Sue is well known for her book HOLD ME TIGHT, which is a great introduction to EFT and a workbook that couples can use at home in conjunction with counseling sessions.

There was once a time when I was a bit skeptical about couples counseling - and then some years ago I followed Sue Johnson for a full day at a couples conference. I was truly astounded by what I was hearing and seeing play out among the couples Sue was working with. One training led to another and so on. I was hooked. Viewing couples through an attachment lens (the basis of EFT)  changed my viewpoint entirely and I am truly excited and honored to share this with my own clients seeking to improve their relationships.
There is hope.  There is a better way.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)...
is a research proven method for helping couples move from distress to trust and closeness.

Please take a look at the video to learn more from the founder of EFT, Dr. Sue Johnson.

EFT is a short term (8 to 20 sessions) structured approach based on attachment science. A substantial body of research now exists on the effectiveness of EFT. This research shows large treatment effect sizes and stable results over time. EFT is used successfully with many different kinds of couples in private practice, university training centers and hospital clinics. Preliminary research exists for couples dealing with depression, with anxiety resulting from trauma, with medical illness and with forgiveness dilemmas. EFT is used with varied cultural groups and educational levels across North America, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Africa and Asia. It is used with traditional and non-traditional couples, including same-sex couples.
Goals:
  • To expand and re-organize key emotional responses and, in the process, the organization of self.
  • To create a positive shift in partners interactional positions and patterns.
  • To foster the creation of a secure bond between partners.
